What we check on a Kodiak
Kodiak belt and clutch
Same Ultramatic belt drive as the Grizzly. Tow a loaded trailer up a slope and a worn belt gives itself away, because the Kodiak loses pace while the revs stay up. We price in a new one.
Rear axle and bearings
Old solid-axle Kodiaks get a wiggle test on the wheel bearings. On the 700 and the newer 450, which have independent rear suspension and so more to wear, we look at the rear CV boots and joints instead.
Racks and tow hitch
Bent racks and a worn hitch mean it's towed heavy. Fine, as long as it's still straight enough to use.
Power steering on EPS Kodiaks
EPS versions are the ones most buyers look for. With the engine running we turn the bars lock to lock and watch for a fault light.
Hours and service receipts
Start with a photo of the hour reading. Receipts help. No paperwork trail? Still an offer.
The Kodiak: Yamaha's simpler work quad
To sell a Yamaha Kodiak well, start with where it sits in Yamaha's range. It was always the plainer Grizzly, cheaper when new. The gearbox is the same Ultramatic belt drive. There's just less kit around it.

Kodiak 700
Launched in 2016 with a 686cc fuel-injected engine and independent rear suspension. You'll find base and EPS versions, plus the SE.
Kodiak 450
The name came back for 2018 on a 421cc fuel-injected mid-size, with EPS on some versions.
Older Kodiaks
The first Kodiak 400s date back to the early 1990s, later joined by a 450. They're carburettor quads with a solid rear axle, and plenty are still working.
Kodiak VIN: left side, low down
Yamaha stamps the Kodiak's VIN on the left lower frame rail, between the front suspension mounts and the engine. On an old 400, grime may bury it. Our guide to quad frame numbers shows where else to look.

Usually, by a little. The hours and the state of the belt count for more than the name on the side panel.
Do you buy the Kodiak 450?
We do. Both the 2018-on fuel-injected 450 and the older carb one.
Can you collect from a smallholding?
We collect from wherever it's kept, including the field gate. Our trailer carries a winch for a Kodiak that won't drive on.
Do you buy old carburettor Kodiak 400s?
Even if it hasn't run for years, yes. Age just goes into the figure.
My Kodiak isn't registered. Does that matter?
No. Most never were. Show us the purchase receipt and we'll tie it to the VIN on the frame.
