On-Command: all three settings
Yamaha's On-Command switch goes from 2WD to 4WD, then to 4WD with the diff locked. Each should engage; tell us if one doesn't.
Yamaha EPS and its warning light
A Grizzly or Kodiak with working EPS is worth more than one without, so if the steering has gone heavy or the warning light stays on after start-up, put that in the form.
Ultramatic belt condition
Yamaha's belt drive is tough. Glazed belt? Juddering clutch? That's a repair, and we price it in.
Special editions and SE trim
SE models often came with alloy wheels and extra kit. Give us the full badge name.
The number under the left footrest
It has to match your V5C or, for a farm Yamaha that was never registered, the dealer invoice.
Utility or sport: two very different Yamahas
If you want to sell your Yamaha quad, the first question is which side of the range it's from. Yamaha builds serious work quads and serious sports quads, and they sell to very different buyers.
Grizzly and Kodiak
The Grizzly is Yamaha's higher-spec utility quad. The 700 arrived for 2007 with fuel injection and optional power steering. The Kodiak is simpler: the current Kodiak 700 was all-new for 2016, and the 450 followed for 2018. Both have their own pages below. Working a farm Yamaha? Raptor and YFZ
The Raptor 700 has been around since 2006 and plenty in the UK were road registered. The YFZ450R, all-new for 2009, is the race quad. Both are often modified. Here's how we price a sports quad like the Raptor or YFZ.
YFM90R and Raptor 110
Yamaha's kids' quads. The YFM90R has a throttle limiter screw and a removable engine speed limiter, and buyers check both. More on selling a youth quad your child has outgrown.
The Ultramatic belt, in plain English
Most Yamaha utility quads use Ultramatic, Yamaha's belt-driven automatic. A centrifugal clutch keeps the belt under constant tension. That cuts wear, and it gives you engine braking on the way down a steep field.
It's a strong system. Belts still wear, though, especially on quads that tow heavy loads or live in deep mud. Tired ones judder when you pull away. Sometimes it smells of burning. Or the engine revs and the quad doesn't pick up speed. None of that stops us buying it. Tell us what you've noticed and, if you know, when the belt was last changed.
Yamahas that won't go
A Grizzly whose belt has let go doesn't put us off. Nor does a Raptor with a holed piston. Yamaha parts are in steady demand, so a dead one still has a price, and we winch it onto the trailer ourselves. Yamaha frame numbers: under the left footrest
Yamaha says the VIN on its quads is stamped into the frame on the left side, under the footrest. Crouch down on that side and look beneath the footboard, and on a farm quad expect to scrape off a good layer of dried mud before the stamping shows. Older models can hide it elsewhere, and our frame number guide lists other places to try.
