Romney Marsh is flat grazing cut through by drainage dykes. It's sheep country. The Romney breed, once called the Romney Marsh or the Kent, takes its name from here. Round Ivychurch and Snargate, each village with its medieval Marsh church, the quad is how the flock gets checked: short, slow trips every day of the year through wet grass and along dyke banks.

A Marsh quad lives in wet ground and salty wind. Brakes and wheel bearings take the worst of it, and so do the wiring and the racks. Faded plastics and a split seat barely move the price. From Hythe the A259 follows the coast through Dymchurch to New Romney before turning inland for Brenzett. The A2070 comes down from Ashford through Hamstreet to Brenzett. For Lydd we take the B2075 from New Romney, past the airport. On the shingle at Dungeness we load from the road or hard standing, and a quad stuck out on wet grazing gets winched from the nearest track.
